What You Need to Know About the BYU Housing Changes

Considering moving to non-BYU housing. Here’s what you need to know.

Recently, Brigham Young University, one of the largest schools in Utah, changed its housing policy. Historically, all single undergraduate students who were attending BYU needed to live in BYU-approved On-Campus or Off-Campus housing. If you’re a BYU student, this housing arrangement has largely governed where you could and couldn’t live. However, as of Fall 2022, all that is going to change. Here’s what you need to know:

1. If you’re a single undergraduate BYU student, you still need to live in the BYU On-Campus Housing, the BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, or with qualifying family members. This includes if you’re a transfer student who has been admitted to a BYU degree-seeking program. If you want an exception, you have to approve it with the BYU Off-Campus Housing Office. Completing both spring and summer academic terms qualifies as one semester.

2. Once you’ve completed two semesters at BYU, you’re eligible to live anywhere. Of course, you can still live at BYU On-Campus or BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, but you’re not required to. Additionally, the availability of BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing for you after your first two years may be more limited.

It’s also important to note that the provisions in the BYU Student-Landlord Rental Agreement that allow you to break your lease for marriage, missions, and other reasons will apply only to BYU On-Campus and BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, so if any you are planning on getting out of your lease for any of those reasons, it may be the best idea to stay in BYU-approved housing.

Moreover, if you do choose to live in non-contracted off-campus housing you will still be required to maintain sex separation in your apartment and abide by the CES Honor Code and BYU student housing policies.

3. In addition to being a single, matriculated BYU student, you’re only eligible to live in available BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing if you’re an BYU evening student, BYU Flex GE student, BYU English Language Center student, BYU Salt Lake Center student, BYU–Hawaii student, BYU–Idaho student, or an Ensign College student.
